ROB KAPILOW TO BE FEATURED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER

LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER’S KAPILOW BROADCAST – “I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S SCHOENBERG!” – WILL AIR LIVE ON PBS STATIONS ON JANUARY 10, 2008*

KAPILOW WILL DEMONSTRATE ARNOLD SCHOENBERG’S MASTERPIECE VERKLÄRTE NACHT AND SHOW JUST “WHAT MAKES IT GREAT”

TWO “WHAT MAKES IT GREAT?®” VIDEO PODCASTS BY KAPILOW ARE NOW AVAILABLE ON iTUNES AND LINCOLN CENTER’S WEB SITE; A THIRD PODCAST WILL BE READY FOR DOWNLOADING AND STREAMING IN MID-DECEMBER

Ten days into the new year, Rob Kapilow – whose What Makes It Great?® and FamilyMusik® concerts are staples of Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series – will appear for the first time on TV’s Live From Lincoln Center, when the long-running Emmy Award-winning television series presents a special program in the elegant Kaplan Penthouse at Lincoln Center.

Rob’s special January 10 program, Live From Lincoln Center: I Can’t Believe It’s Schoenberg, will focus on Schoenberg’s haunting and evocative Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4, for string sextet, a deeply romantic composition that predates his twelve-tone works. It will be broadcast live on WNET Channel 13 New York and on other PBS stations nationwide*. The broadcast is a mark of high recognition for Kapilow, the only composer/host who has his own series within the Great Performers series: the popular What Makes It Great?®, now in its eleventh season at Lincoln Center. For the January 10 broadcast, artist members of the renowned Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will assist Kapilow in exploring Schoenberg’s fascinating composition from the inside out, and will then perform the complete work; the performers include violinists Erin Keefe and Arnaud Sussmann, violists David Kim and Teng Li, and cellists David Finckel and Priscilla Lee.

The program represents an interesting departure in format for Live From Lincoln Center, which usually presents a straightforward concert. During this broadcast, Kapilow will apply his signature What Makes It Great?® treatment to decipher the methods of Arnold Schoenberg, a composer many find difficult to comprehend and appreciate. Verlkärte Nacht is considered Schoenberg’s earliest important work, and while it is difficult to believe that the father of twelve-tone technique wrote such a musical and accessible piece, Kapilow will direct listeners to elements in the music that hint at the composer’s later development as a leader in the early 20th-century movement towards atonality. Both seasoned listeners and untrained ears will find something new and enlightening in Kapilow’s presentation. Following his exploration, the broadcast will end with a performance of the complete work. Less than 30 minutes in length, Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) – a familiar, hauntingly romantic work – is especially well-suited to this program format.

Rob’s home base, Lincoln Center, is also honoring its one-of-a-kind musical guru with another innovation this season: a series of video podcasts of Kapilow’s fall 2007 What Makes It Great?® programs produced by Lincoln Center’s own John Goberman – and two are already available for free download from iTunes and www.lincolncenter.org. Mr. Goberman is also producer of “I Can’t Believe It’s Schoenberg” on January 10.

Two podcasts now available

Recorded live at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, Rob Kapilow presents two of the most beloved works in music history: Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings, with the noted string ensemble Concertante providing musical illustrations and a complete performance of the work; and Bach’s “Italian Concerto”, with Bradley Brookshire, harpsichord. Both are available at iTunes and on Lincoln Center’s web site. Kapilow’s next presentation at Lincoln Center explores the music of Palestrina with Lionheart, one of America's leading ensembles in vocal chamber music; this event on December 10 will be recorded for a third podcast to be available in the third week of December.

At iTunes, where Kapilow has a dedicated page, his podcasts are accessed via searches of such relevant key words as “Rob Kapilow”, “what makes it great”, “Mendelssohn”, “Bach”, etc. There are both audio-visual and audio-only versions of the podcasts, both downloadable free of charge.

Anyone who anticipates viewing, owning, and/or collecting Kapilow’s hugely entertaining and informative presentations may sign up to subscribe to the series: visit iTunes or lincolncenter.org/podcasts.
